CXM GPUs bring seamless visuals to cost-sensitive devices with the smallest HDR GPU, advanced compression, and optimised for leading CPUs, revolutionising consumer technology.

GPUs

Imagination Technologies have launched a range of CXM Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The company claims that GPUs are designed to bring seamless visual experiences to cost-sensitive consumer devices. This innovative lineup includes the smallest GPU capable of natively supporting High Dynamic Range (HDR) user interfaces. As consumers seek detailed, smooth, and responsive visuals on their smart home platforms, content providers are also striving to align the user interfaces of their applications with cinematic content, integrating features like 4K and HDR.

The new CXM GPU configurations expand the performance options available, catering to various consumer spaces. From the CXM-2-64, suitable for wearable devices, smart home hubs, and mainstream set-top boxes with its native HDR support, to the CXM-4-64, an efficient core ideal for integration into smart home hubs, set-top boxes, and mainstream Digital Televisions (DTVs), and finally, the CXM-4-128, a performance-dense option tailored for premium DTVs. Imagination Technologies empowers cost-sensitive consumers with cutting-edge visual experiences across their favourite devices.

The GPUs support 10 bits Red Green Blue Alpha/Luminance Chrominance (RGBA / YUV), enabling the rendering of HDR graphical user interfaces with reduced visible banding and 4x Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing (4xMSAA) efficiently smooths text and image outlines. The Tiny Frame Buffer Compression version 2 (TFBCv2) technology offers improved lossy/lossless compression, ensuring higher-quality compression and an additional compression level (37.5%) for enhanced design flexibility. According to the company’s claim, each GPU in the series boasts a nearly 50% performance density increase compared to the previous GPU family. The GPUs are optimised for leading CPU architectures, including Arm and RISC-V application processors. These GPUs are an addition to RISC-V projects, being silicon-proven and already integrated into multiple products across a diverse range of use cases.

James Chapman, Chief Product Officer, Imagination Technologies, says, “These new CXM GPUs are a significant step up from our widely licensed IMG BXE and BXM range. We’ve taken that highly scalable, area-efficient architecture, boosted its performance density, and added key features, such as native support for HDR, that will transform user experiences and propel our customers to success in the consumer market. I expect to see CXM GPUs deployed in devices as diverse as wearables and premium 8K DTVs.”
