High-Speed Wireless Laser Communication

A laser system can send data 20 km at high speed and stay stable, even in tough conditions. It could change defense communication.

Reliable, high-speed communication over long distances is critical for defense and strategic operations, especially in real-world atmospheric conditions where traditional links may struggle. Olee.space, an Indian photonics and defense technology company, is addressing this challenge with a 20 km, 10 Gbps Wireless Laser Communication system, built mostly with Indian components. This system provides long-range, high-speed optical links for defense and strategic use, ensuring stable communication even when the platform moves or the atmosphere is turbulent.

Designed, built, and tested in India with about 85% local content, the platform demonstrates olee.space’s ability to deliver advanced optical communication technology using domestic resources. Its architecture is flexible and can be adapted for different environments, including land, sea, air, high-altitude platforms, and future space-based communication networks, depending on the operational platform.

The system includes precision opto-mechanical subsystems developed in-house, such as an Indian-made gimbal with arc-second level pointing accuracy and a built-in fast steering mirror assembly. This dual-stage stabilization system, using voice-coil and piezo-mounted actuators, keeps the communication link stable over long distances, even in challenging atmospheric conditions. The platform was designed, integrated, and demonstrated in the field within four months of receiving project funding, showcasing both speed and expertise in development.
