Reference design integrates SmartMCD technology to simplify automotive body motor control while improving protection, diagnostics and communication.

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has developed a reference design for automotive body electronics that simplifies the control of brushed DC motors using its SmartMCD technology. Intended for applications such as power windows, power seats, sunroofs, tailgates and other body control systems, the design combines a microcontroller with an intelligent motor driver to reduce development complexity while improving system reliability. Complete design resources are also provided to help engineers accelerate product development.
The reference design is based on Toshiba’s SmartMCD technology, which combines a microcontroller, motor drivers and the integrated protection functionality. It supports LIN communication and has integrated diagnostic functions that allows the system to detect faults during operation. Integrated protection features, including overcurrent, overtemperature, and undervoltage protection, helps improve system reliability and safety and reduce the need for additional external circuitry.
Designed for automotive body electronics, the reference design enables control of brushed DC motors and offers motor start-up and speed and direction control. The design also incorporates current sensing and diagnostics feedback, which helps the controller to track and respond to abnormal operating conditions.
The evaluation board includes the required control, communication and power interfaces for hardware evaluation and software development. Supporting firmware, circuit schematics and PCB layout data enables engineers to test the reference design and customise it to fit their own applications in automobiles.
Toshiba has provided the reference design with hardware and software related resources which include reference firmware, bill of materials, PCB data and documentation. By combining SmartMCD technology with integrated protection, diagnostics and communication capabilities, the reference design provides a practical foundation for developing automotive motor control systems.
