Reference design delivers a 48W isolated flyback power supply using an integrated 1700V SiC MOSFET for wide-input industrial power applications.

ROHM Semiconductor has developed a reference design for an isolated flyback power supply of 48W using a quasi-resonant (QR) topology. Designed for industrial power applications, the power supply uses a 1700V silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET to support a wide input-voltage range while increasing efficiency and reducing the number of external components. Additionally, the reference design has been supplied with design resources to simplify power-supply development.

The reference design uses a AC/DC converter IC that integrates a 1700V SiC MOSFET inside its high-power surface-mount package. In addition to simplification of circuit design, the use of such integrated products ensures long-term supply to the industrial machinery. The quasi-resonant flyback topology improves switching efficiency of the switching process compared with conventional hard-switching topologies.

This converter is designed for high voltage operation and accepts DC input voltages ranging from 300V to 900V and AC input voltages between 210Vac to 480Vac with 47Hz to 63Hz. The typical output voltage is 24V with a maximum output power of 48W and output current of up to 2A. The converter achieves up to 91 per cent efficiency at 300V DC input and 2A load with output ripple voltage less than 200mV p-p excluding spike noise.

The evaluation board measures 60mm x 180mm and operates over an ambient temperature range of -10°C to 65°C. The standby power consumption is about 310mW when there is no output load. It is advised by ROHM to maintain the surface temperature of the component less than 105°C to ensure reliable operation under higher load conditions.

The reference design provided by ROHM includes the schematics, the PCB layout files, the bill of materials along with a user guide to simplify evaluation and customisation. The combination of high voltage SiC MOSFET, wide input voltage and high efficiency provides a practical foundation for developing isolated industrial power supplies.
