Reference Design For Infrared Forehead Thermometer

With precision, adaptability, and energy efficiency, this innovation sets a new standard in monitoring and safeguarding public health.

In today’s ever-evolving world, health and well-being have taken centre stage like never before. Accurate and non-invasive body temperature measurement has become paramount with the ongoing emphasis on safety and healthcare. The infrared forehead thermometer has emerged as a vital tool in this pursuit, offering a swift, convenient, and contactless means of assessing body temperature. Its significance lies in its ability to provide precise readings and its role as a crucial component in our collective efforts to monitor and safeguard public health. In this age of heightened awareness, the infrared forehead thermometer stands as a symbol of our commitment to maintaining health and safety in a rapidly changing world.

The STEVAL-IME010V1 evaluation board for an infrared forehead thermometer is a cutting-edge electronic thermometer. It harnesses the power of STMicroelectronics’ STM8L052C6 microcontroller and integrates the M24LR04E-R 4-Kbit Dynamic NFC/RFID tag and an infrared sensor for precise measurement of human body temperature. In stark contrast to conventional oral or rectal thermometers, this innovative design delivers precise, gentle, and non-invasive temperature readings. This reference design is built upon the low-power STM8L MCU, meticulously designed for non-invasive body temperature monitoring. This solution is engineered to function flawlessly across an extensive environmental temperature range, from a chilly -40 °C to a sweltering +80 °C. It has precision and reliably measures body temperatures within the human comfort zone, spanning from 20 °C (68 °F) to 42.2 °C (108 °F), achieving a remarkable level of accuracy with a mere +/-0.5 °C margin of error.

Enhancing user convenience, the device has a crystal-clear LCD panel capable of displaying vital information using six alphanumeric characters. It allows displaying temperature data in Celsius or Fahrenheit, catering to user preferences. The adaptable design is compatible with both IR sensors MLX90614 and MLX90615 on a single PCB, optimising usability. It has an integrated low battery-level indicator, ensuring your device remains operational precisely when needed. This creation can store up to 60 temperature readings, facilitating comprehensive tracking and in-depth analysis. In terms of connectivity, an Android application streamlines data logging through an RF EEPROM, seamlessly connecting via the NFC interface.

It is energy-efficient, this reference design consumes a mere 1.2 microamperes in sleep mode, guaranteeing extended battery longevity. Itt adheres to RoHS compliance standards, demonstrating a dedication to environmental sustainability. This innovation seamlessly combines precision, adaptability, and effectiveness, heralding a new era in non-invasive body temperature measurement.
STMicroelectronics has thoroughly tested this reference design, which includes a Design Guide, Bill of Materials (BOM), schematics, and more. Please visit the company’s website for further information on this reference design. To explore this design in greater detail, click here.
