With 12 independently programmable channels, low dropout voltage, PWM and analog dimming, UART over CAN communication, and a rich diagnostics suite, it’s built to power next-generation tail, brake, signal, and interior lighting systems.

12-Channel Automotive LED Driver

Nexperia has announced the launch of its new NEX13120FPC-Q100, a high-performance 12-channel, 40 V high-side LED driver IC designed to meet the rigorous demands of automotive lighting applications. Fully AEC-Q100 qualified and compliant with ASIL-B functional safety standards, this new product simplifies the development of safe and reliable lighting systems including tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and in-cabin illumination.

The key features are:

  • Exceptional thermal efficiency due to low dropout voltage
  • 600 mV dropout at 100 mA, 200 mV lower than competing solutions
  • 15 mW power saving per channel
  • Reduces operating temperature by 5 °C
  • Enhances overall system efficiency and reliability

Each of the IC’s 12 independent channels can be programmed for up to 100 mA output with 8-bit resolution, and channels can be paralleled for higher current needs. The device supports phase-shift PWM dimming, helping to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and deliver smoother load transitions. For even greater flexibility, both analog and PWM dimming are available, enabling complex dynamic lighting effects.

It also supports UART over CAN for robust long-distance off-board communication at speeds up to 2 Mb/s, with the ability to address up to 27 nodes. Its robust diagnostics suite includes open-circuit, short-to-ground, and single LED short-circuit detection. A configurable watchdog function further enhances safety by triggering a fail-safe mode if the CAN bus connection is interrupted.

Rated for junction temperatures from -40 °C to +150 °C, the IC comes in a compact, thermally enhanced 24-pin HTSSOP24 package. For applications where chip-level functional safety is not required, the company also offers the NEX13120PC-Q100, which features the same high-performance specifications without ASIL-B compliance. With this release, the company empowers automotive designers to achieve ASIL-B compliance earlier in the design cycle, offering a robust and efficient solution for next-generation vehicle lighting systems.
