A Broken iPhone Duo Screen Comes With A ₹1.5 Lakh Bill

Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo costs ₹1,49,900 to repair its inner screen in India without AppleCare+, half the phone’s starting price of ₹2,99,900.

Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo combines a large inner display with a complex hinge, but repairing the screen could be expensive. Replacing the inner display without AppleCare+ costs ₹1,49,900 in India, according to reported repair pricing. That is half the phone’s starting price of ₹2,99,900, making repair costs an important consideration for buyers evaluating the device.

The repair bill reflects the engineering complexity of a foldable smartphone, where the display must bend repeatedly while remaining functional. Other repair charges cover components such as the outer display, battery, rear camera and back glass. Final costs may depend on the device’s condition and the service provider’s inspection.

Without AppleCare+, the reported Indian repair charges include ₹1,49,900 for the inner display, ₹42,900 for the outer display, ₹55,900 for the outer display and back glass together, ₹20,900 for the back glass, ₹24,900 for battery service, ₹26,900 for the rear camera and ₹5,900 for the cover layer.

AppleCare+ can significantly reduce repair expenses. The reported plan price is ₹51,900, with inner-display repairs and other damage costing ₹8,900 per service and battery service listed as free under the applicable terms. Buyers should check the policy’s coverage conditions, service fees and limits to determine whether the additional cost is worthwhile.

The inner display helps explain the engineering challenge. According to Apple’s product information, its construction includes a scratch-resistant coating, a polymer cover and glass layers joined with adhesives that allow movement as the phone folds and unfolds. A titanium plate supports the assembly. The hinge contains more than 100 components, while the phone uses two batteries, one in each half of the device.

Foldable displays require careful integration because their layers must withstand repeated bending without separating or losing functionality. The hinge must maintain alignment while protecting the flexible panel. These requirements can make repairs more involved than replacing a conventional smartphone display, particularly when components are integrated into a compact assembly.

The cost difference between repairing a foldable phone and a conventional smartphone can be substantial. A large flexible display must accommodate repeated folding, while its supporting layers and hinge need to work together without damaging the panel. The cost of replacement parts, specialised repair procedures and component integration can all influence the final bill. However, the exact cost depends on the device design and the repair service provided.

For Indian buyers, the reported ₹1,49,900 inner-screen replacement cost is comparable to the price of an entire premium smartphone. AppleCare+ at ₹51,900 would add about 17 per cent to the phone’s starting price. Whether the coverage is worthwhile depends on the likelihood of accidental damage, the cost of individual repairs and the policy’s terms. Buyers should also confirm local service availability and the conditions governing accidental-damage claims.

The high repair cost highlights an important consideration as foldable phones become more widely available: the purchase price alone does not represent the full cost of ownership. For a device with an expensive flexible display and a complex hinge, repair charges, warranty coverage and access to authorised service can be just as important as its hardware specifications.
