Accelerating RTL Design With Artificial Intelligence

The Joules RTL Design Studio delivers up to 5X faster RTL convergence, 25% improved QoR, precise physical insights, and actionable guidance for RTL.

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. has launched the Joules register transfer level (RTL) Design Studio to accelerate the RTL design and implementation process. As per the company’s press release, this tool empowers front-end designers by providing actionable insights and debugging capabilities through a unified cockpit. Users can achieve fully optimised RTL designs before the implementation handoff by leveraging generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for RTL design exploration for big data analytics. The Joules RTL Design Studio enables designers to obtain quick and accurate physical estimates, resulting in up to 5X increased productivity and up to 25% improvement in the RTL’s quality of results (QoR).

Engineers gain access to early power, performance, area, and congestion (PPAC) metrics and actionable debugging information throughout the design cycle. This facilitates the exploration of “what-if” scenarios and potential resolutions to minimise iterations and enhance design outcomes across logical, physical, and production implementation stages. The tool’s integration with a lint checker allows engineers to run incremental lint checks upfront to identify and resolve data and setup issues, reducing errors and faster completion times. The unified cockpit offers RTL designers a streamlined and user-friendly experience, providing physical design feedback, violation localisation, categorisation, bottleneck analysis, and cross-probing capabilities between RTL, schematic, and layout components. Overall, Joules RTL Design Studio significantly enhances the design process, improving RTL development efficiency and quality.

“Now RTL designers can rapidly access all the physical information needed for PPAC debug without having to wait for implementation, which previously took days or weeks,” said Dr Chin-Chi Teng, senior vice president and general manager of the Digital & Signoff Group at Cadence. “Joules RTL Design Studio gives designers visibility into the challenges when they can still be addressed easily, ultimately speeding time to market. Our early engagements reaffirmed our initial target of up to 5X faster RTL convergence and up to 25% improved QoR.”
