New sensor marks a major step toward safer, scalable hydrogen infrastructure—supporting a more sustainable and secure energy future.

Advanced Hydrogen Leak Detection Sensor

Honeywell has introduced a next-generation Hydrogen Leak Detector (HLD) designed to enhance the safety of hydrogen-powered technologies. This new sensor offers precise, real-time detection of hydrogen leaks as small as 50 parts per million, providing a vital safety layer for hydrogen applications across industrial, energy, and transportation sectors.

Built using advanced Thermal Conductivity Detection (TCD) technology, Honeywell’s HLD sensor is engineered to be integrated directly into hydrogen storage, piping systems, power generators, and vehicles. Its high sensitivity and accuracy allow early identification of leaks, helping prevent potentially dangerous incidents such as fires or explosions.

BWR Innovations is already incorporating Honeywell’s HLD technology into its Oncore Energy system—an adaptable hydrogen fuel cell generator for residential and commercial use. “The integration of Honeywell’s HLD sensor ensures reliable, real-time leak detection in our system and significantly enhances overall operational safety,” said Adam Jorgenson, COO of BWR Innovations.

As global hydrogen use expands to power trucks, buses, construction equipment, and home energy systems, safety technologies like the HLD sensor are becoming essential. The Hydrogen Council reports over 90,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were in use worldwide in 2024, a 14% increase from the previous year. HLD sensor stands out by requiring no manual calibration for up to 10 years, unlike many conventional detection systems. This maintenance-free design reduces downtime and operational costs, making it ideal for critical industries.

“Hydrogen is a critical piece of the clean energy future, but safety must be prioritized as adoption grows,” said Moin Shafai, CTO of Honeywell Sensing Solutions. “Our new leak detection sensor is designed to give operators the confidence and tools they need to monitor systems reliably and protect people and assets.”
