Hamamatsu Photonics has developed the S17268 Series, a silicon avalanche photodiode built for precise optical detection in the ultraviolet to visible range. The device combines high sensitivity to short wavelengths, low noise, and low-bias operation in a compact surface-mount package. It is intended for systems where space, power, and signal accuracy are critical.

The photodiode delivers 82 percent quantum efficiency at 450 nm, allowing it to detect weak light signals with good accuracy. It operates at relatively low voltage compared to many traditional detectors, which helps reduce overall power consumption. Despite the lower bias requirement, the device maintains high-speed response and stable performance. This balance between sensitivity, speed, and power efficiency makes it suitable for measurement systems that need consistent and repeatable results.

Its compact design supports easy integration into tightly packed electronic assemblies. Engineers working on portable or space-limited instruments can benefit from the surface-mount format, which simplifies assembly and reduces board area. Low noise characteristics improve the signal-to-noise ratio, which is important in applications where small optical changes must be captured without distortion.

The S17268 Series is targeted at applications such as optical rangefinding, industrial LiDAR, flow cytometry, and particle counting. In these systems, short-wavelength sensitivity and fast detection are essential for accurate distance measurement, cell analysis, or particle detection. As sensing systems continue to shrink while performance expectations increase, components that combine compact size with reliable optical performance become more important. This new series addresses that need by offering a practical balance of sensitivity, speed, and efficiency in a small footprint.
