Graphical Architecture For Electronic Test Systems

In automated test setups where signal routing grows increasingly complex, visual system modelling begins to outline how switching, instrumentation, and cabling interconnect.

Pickering Interfaces has introduced Test System Architect, a graphical online toolset intended to support the design and configuration of signal paths in electronic test systems. The development of automated test systems typically involves coordinating switching hardware, instrumentation modules, cabling, and system architecture across multiple stages of engineering. Beyond the physical hardware itself, much of the effort is often spent defining signal routing, documenting connections, and ensuring that complex test configurations function as intended before deployment.

The toolset is designed to make signal paths visible earlier in the design process. By enabling engineers to map switching routes, instrumentation connections, and system topology graphically, the platform allows complete test architectures to be visualized before hardware integration. This approach provides a clearer representation of how signals move through the system and how different elements interact within complex test environments.

The platform integrates several utilities into a single workflow, including the System Configurator Tool, Schematic Design Tool, Product Selector, and Migration Tool. These functions operate alongside previously released tools such as the Cable Design Tool and Microwave Switch Design Tool.

Within the graphical environment, engineers can select PXI, PXIe hybrid, and LXI or USB chassis and identify switching, simulation, and instrumentation modules suited to specific applications. Third party instruments and modelled devices under test can also be incorporated, enabling a more complete representation of the system during the design stage.

The toolset is offered as a free online graphical platform for signal switching and cabling system design. It enables schematic creation, graphical configuration of system elements, and automated cable design generation.

Additional functions include built in validation checks, cloud based project storage, version control, and automated documentation outputs such as wiring schematics, pin to pin lists, datasheets, and bills of materials. An integrated Migration Tool supports the transition of legacy VXI and GPIB based systems to PXI architectures.
