“The ultra-wide input range means that the part can ride through dips and surges in tough environments, or one part can cover a range of nominal inputs, reducing inventory holding”.~ David Xie, Director R&D and Product Management, Flex Power Modules.

Flex Power Modules has introduced the PKM8100A, a new quarter brick, baseplate-cooled DC/DC converter to its product lineup. This converter has an input range of 9-75VDC, capable of handling 100V for 100 milliseconds. It offers a power output of 100 W with an efficiency of up to 89%. Initially, it comes in two output configurations: 12V/8.35A and 54V/1.85A.

The product has an input to output isolation rating of 3000 VDC, fulfilling the requirements of the IEC/UL 62368-1 standard. It includes features such as remote control, output trim, and remote sensing. The converter is equipped with several protection measures including over-temperature, input under-voltage lockout, and output over-voltage and short circuit.

The device’s physical design follows the industry-standard quarter brick format, with dimensions of 57.9 x 36.8 x 12.7  mm and through-pin connections. It can operate at a maximum baseplate temperature of 110°C, which allows for uninterrupted operation up to an ambient temperature of 85°C with minimal airflow, or up to 75°C in natural convection conditions when mounted on a cold wall.

In terms of electromagnetic compatibility, it complies with Class B of EMC standards EN 55032, CISPR 32, and FCC part 15J, assuming an external input filter is used as specified in the technical documentation. The reliability is noted to be high, with a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 3.78 million hours as per the Telcordia SR-332 standard, issue 3 method 1, at an ambient temperature of 40°C.
