The RT PolarFire development kit will enable designers to solve complex spaceflight challenges by reducing satellite signal processing congestion.

The RT PolarFire development kit is an integrated development platform that combines Microchip’s flight-ready RT PolarFire FPGA with the development kit and interfaces. The development platform is suitable for evaluating design concepts based on actual in-flight electrical and mechanical characteristics. The RT PolarFire FPGA increases mission-critical computing and connectivity throughput compared to SRAM FPGAs while consuming up to 50 per cent less power and offering greater immunity to radiation-induced configuration Single Event Upsets (SEUs). This platform will enable designers to solve difficult spaceflight challenges as reducing satellite signal processing congestion. Moreover, the development kit employs the same FPGA board that will be used in the spacecraft, therefore, it will enable designers to prototype with the same low-power, high-throughput radiation-tolerant (RT) FPGA thus enabling them to do proper testing of all the parameters.

“Our new integrated development platform for space applications includes features and interfaces that are ideal for prototyping,” said Shakeel Peera, vice president of marketing for Microchip’s FPGA business unit. “Using the same package and silicon that final, in-orbit or deep-space units will have, designers can evaluate high-speed transceivers and test all of their control, DSP, communications and image-processing algorithms.”

Microchip’s RT PolarFire FPGA is a power-efficient platform which offers up to 50% energy saving while increasing mission-critical computing and connectivity throughput compared to SRAM FPGAs. To enable the designers to evaluate high-speed transceivers and test all of their control, DSP, communications and image-processing algorithms, the RT PolarFire development kit employs the same package and silicon that final, in-orbit or deep-space units will have. It can be used to solve such difficult spaceflight challenges as reducing satellite signal processing congestion. RT PolarFire FPGA comes with MIL-STD-883 Class B qualification, making microelectronic devices suitable for use within military and aerospace electronic systems, including basic environmental tests to determine resistance to deleterious effects of natural elements and conditions surrounding military and space operations.
