RF Connectors Adapt To Magnetic Environments

What happens when RF connections are needed near powerful magnetic fields? Material selection becomes critical, particularly in medical imaging systems.

Amphenol RF introduces a compact MCX end-launch jack.

Amphenol RF have developed a non-magnetic MCX end-launch jack for RF systems in magnetics sensitive applications. The MCX end-launch jack is made from non-ferrous materials and is suitable for applications in medical imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) where components can interact with powerful magnetic fields and therefore impact image quality.

The small design is suitable for PCBs with multiple RF connections. The end launch design allows the connector to be used on the edge of the PCB and the MCX interface means multiple connections can be closely packed. This makes the connector suitable for wireless modules in GPS and Wi-Fi applications.

The push-on design allows for rapid connection and disconnection. It has a minimum life expectancy of 500 mating cycles.

The connector offers 50Ohm impedance and can operate up to 6GHz. It has a gold plated beryllium copper housing and centre contact with a PTFE insulation. The connector has an ‘NM’ stamp on the connector to show it’s non-magnetic.

The introduction expands the company’s portfolio of non-magnetic interconnect solutions for magnetically sensitive RF applications.
