Vishay Intertechnology has introduced the BCcomponents SMDY1…S series of AC line-rated ceramic disc safety capacitors. The surface-mount capacitors have a Y1 rating of 300 VAC and 1500 VDC and are designed for EMI/RFI suppression and filtering in industrial equipment.

The new capacitors can reduce board space requirements by up to 40% compared with previous-generation devices, helping manufacturers build smaller products.

The single-layer capacitors are designed for applications including industrial motor drives, welding equipment, inverters, UPS systems, rail power supplies, HVAC systems, LED drivers, smart home systems, computer power supplies, AC/DC converters, washing machines, refrigerators, and automotive charging stations.

The devices comply with IEC 60384-14 and are certified by UL, CSA, VDE, ENEC, and CQC. Their Y1 rating allows them to be used across double or reinforced insulation. They can also be used in DC networks up to 1500 VDC in accordance with Annex H of the IEC standard.

The SMDY1…S series offers an insulation resistance of at least 10,000 MΩ and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. This is higher than the industry-standard insulation resistance of 6000 MΩ and the typical temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

Vishay subjects every capacitor to 100% production testing. The end-of-line testing includes checks for AC voltage, capacitance, dissipation factor, insulation resistance, and visual quality.

The surface-mount design supports pick-and-place assembly and reflow soldering, removing the manual soldering steps required for through-hole components. This can simplify production and reduce manufacturing costs.

The capacitors are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free. They use a copper- and silver-plated ceramic disc with flame-resistant UL 94 V-0 epoxy resin encapsulation. The series is available in A case sizes with capacitance values from 10 pF to 680 pF and B case sizes from 1000 pF to 1500 pF.
