A new high-dynamic-range DAC enters the market with studio-grade noise performance, wide temperature tolerance, and compact packaging aimed at precision audio playback and embedded pro-audio gear.

Nuvoton has unveiled its latest high-performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the NAU8421YG, targeting hi-fi and pro-audio playback and recording systems. It is a 24-bit stereo DAC, capable of delivering an 8 Vpp differential analog output. It boasts an impressive 128 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) of –99 dB, underscoring its suitability for applications where audio quality and precision are critical.
On the analog output side the DAC supports differential line-level output making it ideal for feeding external pre-amplifiers, powered speakers, studio monitors, or mixing consoles. As such, it could serve as the core analog-front end in devices ranging from high-end audio interfaces to professional sound cards and instrument or mixer systems.
The key features are:
- 105 dB PSRR at 1 kHz to suppress power-supply interference
- 140 dB channel separation at 1 kHz for strong stereo isolation
- Automatic clock-detection for stable startup
- Supports independent hardware-control mode
- Low-power consumption suitable for portable or embedded designs
- Industrial operating range: –40°C to +85°C
It operates from a 3.3 V digital I/O supply and a 5 V analog supply, and is packaged in a compact QFN-32 form factor (5 × 5 mm), facilitating integration even in space-constrained designs. Beyond raw performance, the DAC offers useful system-integration features: it includes an I²C control interface with pin-selectable modes and supports standalone (hardware-control) operation. It also implements automatic clock-detection sequences to manage clean power-up and power-down transitions a plus for build reliability and reducing audio artifacts during power cycling.
Given its mix of high dynamic range, low distortion, and flexible interfacing, Nuvoton positions the NAU8421YG primarily for:
- High-quality stereo audio playback systems, including dedicated DAC + amplifier setups.
- Professional audio devices sound cards, mixers, effects units, e-pianos, recording consoles where clean, low-noise analog output matters.
- Multi-channel or studio-level audio systems and measurement equipment where channel separation (crosstalk suppression) and signal integrity are essential.
For engineers and system architects working on audio-centric embedded platforms — from audio interfaces and hi-fi streamers to digital mixers or pro-audio tools NAU8421YG offers a compelling mix of analog performance and integration convenience. Its strong SNR, low distortion, differential output, and compact footprint simplify PCB design, allowing a high-fidelity analog path without large boards or complex external components.
