Violet Laser Takes Over Mercury Lamps

Nuvoton Releases Compact High-Power Violet Laser Diode (402nm, 1.7W)
Nuvoton Releases Compact High-Power Violet Laser Diode (402nm, 1.7W)

Designed for industrial and medical designers, the device offers mercury lamp replacement performance without increasing package size or system complexity.

As optical systems become smaller and more integrated across industrial, medical and manufacturing equipment, designers are under pressure to deliver higher output power within limited space while maintaining long operating life. Traditional mercury lamps are bulky, power hungry and difficult to integrate into compact systems, while higher power semiconductor lasers often generate excess heat that limits package size and reliability.

To address these challenges, Nuvoton Technology has introduced a compact violet laser diode delivering 1.7 W optical output at a wavelength of 402 nm in the industry standard TO 56 CAN package. The device is designed to support space constrained optical systems while offering higher output power and extended lifetime.

Reducing optical loss inside the laser chip, heat generation is suppressed, allowing higher output without increasing package size. A newly developed optical facet structure improves resistance to high intensity laser light, enabling stable operation and longer service life. Compared with previous products, the diode delivers approximately 40 percent higher output power along with improved reliability indicators.

The 402 nm diode is intended for use as an alternative light source to mercury lamp h line emissions. Target applications include laser direct imaging, resin curing, laser welding, additive manufacturing, biomedical equipment and display systems. The product also expands the company’s mercury lamp replacement line-up, offering greater flexibility in system design based on application and installation requirements.
