xMEMS Labs, known for pioneering piezoMEMS technology and all-silicon micro speakers, has announced Lassen, a new micro tweeter designed for mass-market True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds.

Lassen delivers high-quality µFidelity audio, producing up to 115dB SPL across 6kHz to 20kHz from a standard 1Vrms signal—no external amplifier required. This compact speaker (3.2 x 5 x 1.15 mm) consumes minimal power and simplifies the design of 2-way wireless earbuds.

Built on xMEMS’ proven MEMS platform, Lassen enables easy integration and high-volume production. By eliminating the need for a separate piezo amplifier, it reduces cost by about 25%, helping solid-state MEMS speakers compete with traditional micro tweeter technologies like balanced armature and planar magnetic drivers—while offering better sound clarity and detail.

Previous xMEMS solutions like Cowell and Muir required additional amplification, but Lassen simplified the design while maintaining the sound performance that earned praise from brands like Creative Labs and Soundpeats.

Some of the key features of the Lassen include:

  • Plays very clear high-pitched sounds (6kHz to 20kHz)
  • No need for extra amplifier
  • Very small size (3.2 x 5 x 1.15 mm)
  • Uses very little power
  • Lower cost than older versions
  • Easy to fit into earbuds
  • Helps make better 2-way earbud sound
  • Made in big chip factories for high quality
  • Good for high-res and 3D sound audio

“The industry has embraced the superior audio quality of 2-way speakers in TWS earbuds, as well as the ability of xMEMS speakers to enhance that quality,” said Mike Housholder, VP, Marketing & Business Development at xMEMS. “Lassen is a revolutionary design based on a proven platform. It will bring the benefits of 2-way earbud audio to a broader market by eliminating extra cost of the piezo amplifier and minimizing the space and power required to deliver a truly immersive TWS sound experience.”
