The module is designed to deliver computing and AI processing in a compact form factor for embedded and IoT devices. It uses an LGA178 footprint and exposes all GPIOs to developers, allowing direct access for connecting external peripherals and building custom hardware designs.

The AstraSOM261x is part of the Astra product family from Grinn. Its development reflects ongoing collaboration with Synaptics, combining compact hardware design with the Astra AI-native processor architecture.

The module uses Astra SL2610 processors that run on the Synaptics Torq Edge AI platform. The platform integrates neural processing hardware with software tools intended for edge AI development.

Torq also includes the first production deployment of the Google Coral NPU developed by Google Research. The NPU supports dynamic operator capabilities aimed at handling evolving AI workloads at the edge.

The platform uses an open-source IREE/MLIR compiler and runtime, allowing developers to build and deploy machine-learning models for IoT and edge systems using an open development stack.

Some of the key features of the AstraSOM261x includes:

  • Grinn AstraSOM261x works in temperatures from –40 °C to +85 °C.
  • Uses single or dual-core Arm Cortex-A55 and a Arm Cortex-M52 core.
  • Includes a 1 TOPS NPU for AI processing.
  • Uses Mali-G31 GPU for graphics and supports Full HD at 60 fps.
  • Runs on a single 4.5–5.5 V DC power input.
  • Supports MIPI-CSI and MIPI-DSI for cameras and displays.
  • Includes dual Ethernet with TSN and IEEE 1588 support.
  • Also supports USB 2.0, CAN-FD, and high-speed serial interfaces.

“The Grinn AstraSOM261x represents a step forward in our idea to simplify complex electronics,” said Robert Otręba, CEO of Grinn. “By packing the power of the Synaptics Astra 2610 into a tiny 25x25mm module, we are enabling our customers to build smarter, smaller, and more efficient devices. This is the ultimate tool for those looking to a compact solution for making decisions at the Edge.”
