Capacitors For Powertrain Systems

The new capacitors handle heat, ripple, and vibration while saving space in powertrain and xEV systems. Could this change the way engineers design modules?

Design engineers working on automotive powertrain systems often face ripple current, heat, and space limitations. TDK Corporation’s B41699 and B41799 series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors help address these challenges by reducing the number of capacitors needed in modules such as electric power steering, fan control, and transmission systems.

The primary users of these capacitors are automotive design engineers developing powertrain modules, electronic control units, and other systems exposed to high thermal and mechanical stress. They are also relevant for engineers working on xEV platforms who need components that balance compact design with long operating life and compliance with automotive standards.

The company claims that the capacitors are designed to operate at temperatures up to +140 °C, making them suitable for xEV platforms with 12-V systems where vibration and thermal stress are key design concerns. With capacitance values ranging from 1800 µF to 13,000 µF and ripple current ratings up to 34.6 A at 10 kHz and +125 °C case temperature, they provide stable energy handling in compact layouts. Their low ESR at high frequencies further supports efficiency in demanding power circuits.

The B41699 version with axial leads and the B41799 version with a soldering star design allow flexible mounting in horizontal, vertical, or busbar configurations. Dimensions range from 16 x 25 mm to 21 x 49 mm, covering different design needs. The capacitors offer more than 4000 hours of useful life at +125 °C under rated conditions, with optional vibration stability up to 60 g for harsher environments.

Built on TDK’s SIKOREL technology, the capacitors provide up to 15 years of storage at +35 °C. They also comply with AEC-Q200 standards and are RoHS-compatible, ensuring reliability, qualification for automotive use, and long-term availability.
