The Staff Applications Engineer will support Renesas input protection products for enterprise, data centre, AI server, telecom, and industrial power systems. This is a hands-on hardware role focused on customer support, board debug, validation, reference designs, and practical design guidance and requires strong power electronics experience. The engineer will work with systems, design, validation, product marketing, field teams, and customers to solve real application issues and help customers adopt Renesas power products successfully.
Principal Accountabilities
- Provide applications support for input protection devices used in 48 V and emerging 800 V / ±400 V power systems.
- Support customers and field teams through schematic reviews, PCB layout reviews, component selection, bench debug, issue reproduction, root cause analysis, and clear design recommendations.
- Develop and validate evaluation boards, demo boards, proof of concept hardware, and reference designs for high current and high voltage applications.
- Debug hardware, register configuration, PMBus/I²C communication, gate drive behaviour, isolation interfaces, system transients, and customer board failures.
- Use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, high voltage supplies, electronic loads, power analysers, thermal tools, differential probes, and automated test setups.
- Create scripts, calculators, GUI utilities, and data analysis tools to support validation, characterisation, and customer debug.
- Support new silicon bring-up, identify application gaps early, and work with design and systems teams to improve product robustness.
- Review and write customer documentation such as datasheets, application notes, user guides, design guides, test reports, troubleshooting notes, and training material.
- Work closely with marketing, systems, design, validation, quality, sales, and field teams to support product launch, customer design in, and issue closure.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field; bachelor’s degree with strong relevant experience may also be considered.
- 3+ years of experience in applications engineering, field applications, validation, product engineering, or hardware development for analog or power semiconductor products.
- Strong hands-on board and system debug experience, including issue reproduction, waveform analysis, fault isolation, root cause troubleshooting, and corrective action recommendations.
- Good understanding of power electronics, input protection, MOSFETs gate drive, current sensing, thermal behavior, and protection concepts.
- Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout review, board bring-up, high current routing, grounding, noise coupling, isolation, and measurement best practices.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as PSpice, SIMPLIS, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar tools for power, transient, thermal, or signal/power integrity analysis.
- Comfortable using common lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, power analyzers, thermal cameras, probes, and solder/rework tools.
- Able to write clear customer-facing documents and work directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications / Desired Experience
- Experience with high voltage products, 800 V or ±400 V HVDC systems, solid state relays, eFuses, live insertion, or high power data centre systems.
- Knowledge of PMBus/I²C telemetry, register configuration, fault logging, GUI tools, and lab automation using Python, C/C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
- Experience validating startup into large capacitance, short circuit behaviour, load transients, retry/latch off behaviour, and safe operating area limits.
- Familiarity with isolation concepts, isolated interfaces, bias supplies, HV lab safety, EMI, and ESD considerations.
- Experience creating EVMs, reference designs, demo platforms, user guides, application notes, design calculators, and training material.
- Customer-facing experience with enterprise or data center customers, server OEMs/ODMs, hyperscalers, telecom customers, or field applications teams.
Able to manage ambiguity, prioritize customer issues, and drive practical solutions with limited day to day direction.
