ROHM has launched RPR-0720, a compact 2.0mm × 1.0mm proximity sensor, fine-tuned for tasks involving attachment/detachment and proximity detection. The versatile sensor is suitable for numerous applications that rely on light reflection to discern specific conditions. It can adeptly detect the attachment or detachment of devices such as wireless earbuds, smartwatches, gaming console controllers, and Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Furthermore, it’s proficient in paper detection within office equipment like printers, copiers, and shredders. The sensor can also identify cartridge or liquid presence in e-cigarettes and monitor diverse conditions in smartphones and laptops.

The company claims that the sensors integrate light-emitting and receiving elements within a single unit, ensuring unparalleled adaptability that suits everything from mobile gadgets to industrial machinery. The RPR-0720 is a pioneering optical sensor module utilizing a Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). It is known for superior directivity over LEDs as its light emitter and a dedicated sensor IC as its receiver. Strategic optimization of the module design with proprietary chips achieves a remarkable 78% size reduction relative to traditional counterparts. Moreover, its built-in VCSEL’s broad input voltage spectrum (2.7V to 4.5V) renders an external voltage booster circuit redundant when powered by a Li-ion battery, further maximizing space efficiency and paving the way for tinier devices and expanded battery capacity. Its versatility extends beyond attachment/detachment sensing, proving adept at recognizing various states across numerous applications.
