Expanding SATA Storage for High-Capacity Needs

As workloads grow more data-intensive, a new 8TB SSD explores how far SATA-based storage can scale without requiring major system upgrades or changes.

Samsung Electronics has introduced an 8TB variant to its long-running 870 EVO SATA III SSD series, extending the storage range for users working with increasingly large datasets. The new capacity sits at the top of the existing line-up, which spans from 250GB to 4TB, and is aimed at professionals, PC users, and NAS environments that require both scale and reliability.

The addition reflects a broader shift in storage demand. As high-resolution video, gaming assets, and large project files continue to grow in size, higher-capacity drives are becoming essential rather than optional. By doubling the previous maximum capacity in the series, the 8TB model allows users to consolidate storage while maintaining compatibility with existing SATA-based systems.

In terms of performance, the drive reaches sequential read and write speeds of up to 560MB/s and 530MB/s, approaching the upper limits of the SATA III interface. Samsung’s Intelligent TurboWrite technology is used to sustain write performance during heavier workloads, helping maintain consistency during tasks such as media transfers or large file operations.

The SSD is built using Samsung’s 6th generation V-NAND along with its MKX controller, supporting endurance levels of up to 4,800 TBW under a five-year limited warranty. This positions the drive for both everyday computing and more demanding use cases, including 4K and 8K video processing. Broad compatibility remains a key aspect, with the 2.5-inch SATA form factor allowing integration across desktops, laptops, and NAS systems without requiring major hardware changes.

Further the support is extended through the company’s Magician software, which provides tools for performance monitoring, data migration, and firmware updates.

Simon Howe, Director – Visual Display and Brand Memory Division at Samsung Australia, says, “The new 8TB model brings the same tried-and-tested reliability while addressing the increasing demand for high-capacity storage as data volumes continue to grow with the rise of high-resolution video, gaming, and large-scale file management.”
