Combating Airborne Coronavirus With Ion Technology Inspired By Nature

Indoor venues like offices, malls and schools are more susceptible to the spread of airborne coronavirus. But these places can operate safely with the help of the Plasmacluster Ioniser (PCI) module developed by Sharp Singapore. As per tests conducted by the Nagasaki University of Japan, the PCI is effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. The device is a retrofit module that can be installed into existing air conditioners.

Working 

Inspired by nature, the PCI deactivates airborne viruses and bacteria by breaking down proteins on their surface. PCI splits water molecules from the air to release positive hydrogen (H⁺) and negative oxygen (O₂⁻) ions to transform into OH radicals. These OH radicals cling to viruses or other pathogens and extract hydrogen (H) from their surface, thus damaging its defence (think of it as puncturing its spacesuit) and neutralising it.  

Safe & Natural 

PCI ions are safe. Tests conducted with excessive concentrations show no skin and eye irritation since the positive and negative ions are the same as those created in nature by a waterfall. In fact, the healthy ion concentration creates a moisturising effect. Besides sanitising the air, PCI creates a feeling of freshness and relaxation for people living in an urban environment.

Easy to Fit into Existing Systems 

The retrofit PCI modules can be easily installed in the ducts of existing HVAC systems. Now there is no need to worry about harmful micron-sized virus particles evading filtration systems and staying in the air for hours. Besides eliminating airborne pathogens, the upgrade also enables the aircons to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC), unpleasant odours and static charge, making the surrounding air safe and pleasant.
