Motor Control ICs Integrate Outer Loop And Velocity Loop Functions

Using digital logic integration, the devices allow any measurable outer loop quantity to be controlled to obtain better precision results

To efficiently control pressure, temperature, liquid level, magnetic bearings, chemical reaction rate and other ‘outer loop’ quantities for medical, industrial, and military applications, the newly released Juno MC71113, MC73113 and MC78113 ICs integrate a high-speed outer loop control function with a velocity control function for 3-phase Brushless DC and DC Brush motors.

The Juno ICs use digital logic integration and algorithms to help execute the controlling functions. In these, the output of the outer loop becomes the input to the motor velocity loop, which commands the torque loop. Any measurable outer loop quantity can be controlled as long as the commanded motor velocity proportionally affects the measured outer loop quantity.

Application examples include ventilators where Brushless DC (BLDC) motor turbine speed directly affects measured chamber pressure and process temperature control where the flow rate of a pump introducing cooling fluid lowers a process chamber temperature. By integrating the outer loop function with the velocity control function in a single IC at control loop rates as high as 10 kHz, unprecedented levels of precision and control of the outer loop quantity are possible.

“The new Juno Outer Loop Control IC is a completely novel product that answers the growing call for integrated control ICs that apply advanced algorithms to control pressure, temperature, chemical reactions and other critical applications. By integrating outer loop control with motor velocity and torque control functions, what previously may have required as many as three separate ICs can now be achieved in a single compact IC package,“ said Chuck Lewin, Founder and CEO of Performance Motion Devices (PMD).

Available in a 64-pin TQFP package measuring 12×12 mm from PMD, the Juno outer loop control ICs provide functions for spindle control, centrifuge control, precision torque control, and a wide variety of other liquid handling and laboratory automation applications.
