As demand rises for higher bandwidth and constant wired connectivity, compact systems now require multi gigabit Ethernet support without redesigning hardware. Devices such as edge AI computers, docking stations, gaming consoles and smart home equipment rely on USB based networking to provide stable, low latency connections.

To meet this need, ASIX introduced the AX88279A, a USB 3.2 Gen1 to 2.5G Ethernet controller with integrated 2.5G, 1G, 100M, and 10M Ethernet PHY. It provides 2.5G Ethernet connectivity via USB and supports Windows, Linux, Android, Chrome OS, Nintendo Switch in box drivers, and macOS/Linux native CDC NCM for driverless plug and play operation.

The AX88279A combines a USB device controller and Ethernet controller on a single chip. It integrates an on chip USB Type C 3.2 Gen1 PHY compliant with USB 3.2 Gen1, 2.0, and 1.1, supporting multiple USB speeds and power saving modes. The Ethernet controller supports IEEE standards from 10BASE Te to 2.5GBASE T and includes Precision Time Protocol and Time Sensitive Networking. Additional functions include packet offload, VLAN handling, jumbo frames, power management and wake on LAN.
