Reference designs broaden long-range wireless connectivity for developers

New reference designs aim to bring long-range wireless connectivity to existing devices, giving developers practical routes to upgrade routers, computers, robotics and tablets more easily.

Morse Micro has introduced two Wi-Fi HaLow USB dongle reference designs, based on its MM8108 system-on-chip, aimed at bringing long-range wireless connectivity to a broad range of existing devices. The designs are intended to help developers add Wi-Fi HaLow capabilities through a USB connection without requiring major hardware changes.

The two reference designs target different applications. The MM8108-RD09 provides native Wi-Fi HaLow connectivity for devices including access points and stations. OpenWrt, Windows and Linux support is available, while a macOS application allows users to connect to Wi-Fi HaLow networks in a similar way to conventional Wi-Fi.

The MM8108-RD17 is designed for wider integration into client products. When connected, it appears to the host as a standard CDC-NCM Ethernet interface, allowing Wi-Fi HaLow connectivity without requiring additional host drivers.

According to the information shown, the dongles can support connectivity at distances of up to one kilometre, potentially extending wireless coverage well beyond conventional Wi-Fi applications. The designs are positioned for use across industrial computers, robotics equipment, point-of-sale terminals, tablets and smartphones.

Devices running Android or iOS can also be authenticated using Wi-Fi Easy Connect, with a pairing button providing a simpler connection process.

The reference designs are intended to support a variety of deployment scenarios. The MM8108-RD09 can help internet service providers upgrade existing wireless routers to provide longer-range connectivity, while the MM8108-RD17 can add Wi-Fi HaLow capability to existing devices such as laptops and tablets.

Morse Micro says the reference designs, including their schematics and software, are available to eligible customers through its sales contacts. The company expects the approach to accelerate Wi-Fi HaLow adoption by making integration easier for existing hardware.

Overall, the designs provide developers with a practical route towards kilometre-range wireless connectivity while reducing the need for extensive hardware or software modifications.
