Handheld X-Ray Generator Brings Imaging Anywhere

Can X-ray imaging work without a dedicated room or generator? A handheld system combines battery power, portability, and AI-assisted reporting.

Lenek Technologies has developed LeXIS, a handheld battery-powered X-ray generator designed to bring diagnostic imaging to healthcare centres that lack conventional X-ray infrastructure.

The 3.5 kg system is designed for point-of-care imaging in rural and semi-urban clinics, primary healthcare centres, screening camps, and other locations where unreliable electricity or limited infrastructure can restrict access to X-ray diagnostics.

Unlike conventional X-ray installations that require a dedicated room and supporting electrical infrastructure, the portable system operates on battery power. Lenek says centres using it do not need a dedicated X-ray room, specialised electrical earthing, an inverter, or a diesel generator.

The system can be operated by a licensed radiographer, allowing X-rays to be captured at the point of care rather than requiring patients to travel to distant diagnostic facilities. This can be particularly useful for clinics handling more than 50 patients a day, including healthcare centres that may be difficult to reach by car.

For analysis, the company has developed LIRA, an AI-powered radiology platform designed to work with X-ray modalities. It can assist with chest X-ray analysis, generate reports, and enable images to be shared with doctors remotely. This extends the imaging workflow to locations where radiologists may not be physically present.

The portable X-ray technology builds on Lenek’s earlier work in tuberculosis screening, where the focus was on combining handheld imaging with AI-based TB detection for screening populations in remote areas.

The combination of a 3.5 kg form factor, battery-powered operation, and AI-assisted analysis allows X-ray imaging to move beyond fixed diagnostic rooms towards mobile point-of-care workflows. The system is designed to reduce the infrastructure required for deployment while supporting image capture, analysis, reporting, and remote consultation.

“So when I now demonstrate our handheld X-ray generator to doctors working in places a car can’t even reach, clinics seeing 50+ patients a day, I feel genuinely hopeful,” says Chirag Agrawal, co-founder, Lenek Technologies. “These centres no longer need a dedicated X-ray room, specialised electrical earthing, an inverter or diesel generator.”
