As a DC Protection Engineer, you will be part of the Grid Technologies team, contributing to the design, development, and validation of advanced HVDC Control & Protection solutions. Working closely with global engineering teams, you will support the delivery of reliable and secure power transmission systems by developing DC protection functions, performing protection coordination studies, and validating solutions through simulation and real-time testing environments. Your work will play a critical role in enabling the transition toward a more sustainable energy future.

How You’ll Make an Impact

DC Protection System Design & Protection Coordination (40%)

  • Analyse and define requirements for DC protection and measurement systems within HVDC projects.
  • Design, parameterise, and optimise DC protection functions to ensure reliable fault detection and system performance.
  • Conduct detailed DC Protection Coordination Studies using electromagnetic transient simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC.
  • Simulate complex fault and network scenarios to evaluate protection system behaviour.
  • Develop, document, and validate protection settings in accordance with project requirements, grid codes, and international standards.
  • Ensure technical quality, reliability, and compliance of protection solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

Software Development & Platform Integration (30%)

  • Develop, customise, and optimise protection algorithms using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Implement software applications for HVDC Control & Protection systems utilising model-based design methodologies.
  • Integrate application software into HVDC Control & Protection platforms while ensuring functionality, performance, and compatibility.
  • Support continuous enhancement of protection software architecture and engineering processes.

Testing, Verification & Technical Support (30%)

  • Perform Model-Based Testing (MBT) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) validation activities using Real-Time Digital Simulators (RTDS).
  • Verify performance and reliability of protection functions through comprehensive testing and simulation.
  • Analyse, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues identified during development and testing phases.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), system integration testing, and customer acceptance activities.
  • Act as the technical focal point for DC protection-related topics, providing guidance to project teams and customers.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and training materials, and conduct knowledge-sharing sessions.

Education:

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field with specialisation in Power Systems, Protection Engineering, or High-Voltage Engineering.

Experience:

  • 3-5+ years of professional experience in HVDC protection engineering, power system studies, or real-time simulation environments.
  • Experience with protection system design, protection coordination studies, and testing of power transmission applications.
  • Exposure to international engineering projects and collaboration with cross-functional teams is preferred.
