Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) play a crucial role in modern energy infrastructure, enabling efficient storage and management of energy in residential, commercial, industrial, and grid-scale applications. For design engineers, a well-structured BESS is essential for optimizing energy efficiency, ensuring system reliability, and enhancing safety. A BESS consists of various high-voltage system structures, with commercial and industrial systems comprising multiple racks containing stacked battery packs, whereas residential BESS designs typically include only battery packs. The selection of high-accuracy components is vital for achieving precise monitoring, robust communication, and efficient power conversion.

This reference design TIDA-010279 by Texas Instruments features a 52s lithium-ion (Li-ion) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack with full cell-temperature sensing and high-voltage accuracy. The system continuously monitors each cell’s voltage and temperature while implementing robust protection mechanisms to ensure safe operation. With support for both daisy-chain and CAN-based communication, this design enables stackable architectures up to 1500V, making it highly suitable for high-capacity battery energy storage applications.

The BQ78706 is a high-accuracy battery management system (BMS) component designed to measure cell voltage with precision in up to 14-series (14s) battery modules. It plays a key role in energy storage systems (ESS) and portable power stations (PPS), ensuring reliable monitoring and safety of high-voltage batteries. Multiplexers (MUX) such as the TMUX1308-Q1 and TMUX1309-Q1 enhance signal routing efficiency in BESS. The TMUX1308-Q1 is an 8:1, single-channel multiplexer, while the TMUX1309-Q1 is a 4:1, dual-channel differential multiplexer. 

For high-speed communication, the TCAN1044-Q1 transceiver is a vital component in BESS, meeting ISO 11898-2:2016 standards for Controller Area Network (CAN) communication. It ensures seamless data transfer and communication reliability, which is essential for managing large-scale battery systems. Microcontrollers (MCUs) such as the MSPM0Gx51x series are integral to intelligent BESS operation. They include dual CAN-FD controllers, cybersecurity features, and high-performance integrated analog functions, making them ideal for energy storage applications requiring precise control and low power consumption.

For power regulation, the LMR514xx synchronous buck converter supports a wide voltage input range of 4V to 42V and can drive loads up to 1A, making it suitable for industrial applications that require stable power from unregulated sources. Additionally, the ISO773x digital isolators provide triple-channel isolation with ratings of up to 5000VRMS, ensuring safe and reliable operation in high-voltage environments. Power modules such as the UCC33420 and UCC33421-Q1 integrate transformer technology to provide isolated DC/DC power conversion with 1.5W output.
