Driving Motors In Everyday Devices

ROHM’s Flexible Brushed DC Motor Driver ICs for a Wide Range Applications
ROHM’s Flexible Brushed DC Motor Driver ICs for a Wide Range Applications

From home appliances to industrial tools these motor driver ICs help designers save space power and development time.

As consumer and industrial equipment continues to expand, the demand for energy efficient brushed DC motors is rising. Designers are expected to build compact systems that support multiple applications, use fewer external components, and reach the market faster. This has increased the need for flexible motor driver solutions that balance performance, efficiency, and simple design.

Addressing these requirements, ROHM Semiconductor India has introduced two new brushed DC motor driver ICs, BD60210FV and BD64950EFJ. These devices are designed for multiple home and office appliances. Their adaptability also makes them suitable for redesigns and derivative platforms, helping manufacturers reuse designs across multiple products.

The ICs support modern energy conscious system designs. They focus on reducing power loss, simplifying circuits, and enabling use across a wide range of applications without adding design complexity.

Key advantages include:

  • Ultra low standby current with a typical value of 0.0 microamp and a maximum of 1.0 microamp, reducing power loss during standby
  • Versatile packages that support both new designs and upgrades to existing platforms
  • Reduced external component requirements for smaller and simpler circuits
  • Support for multiple motor control methods across applications
  • High efficiency operation that lowers heat generation and improves system reliability

The first IC supports dual channel H bridge operation with direct PWM control. It can drive two brushed DC motors, bipolar stepper motors, or solenoids. Its H bridge configuration eliminates the need for a boost circuit, enabling compact designs. The device supports input voltages from 8 V to 18 V, with 1 A continuous current per phase and up to 4 A peak current.

The latter features a single channel H bridge and supports both direct PWM and constant current PWM control. Its low on resistance design helps reduce heat while maintaining stable performance. It supports input voltages up to 40 V, with 3.5 A continuous current and 6 A peak current.

Both products come with evaluation boards available to support development. The company continues to expand its IC portfolio to support energy efficient and high performance consumer and industrial systems.
