GaN Board Powers 3-Phase Motors

3-phase BLDC motor control to a compact, high-performance form factor using GaN FETs for 48 V systems.

GaN Board Powers 3-Phase Motors

Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) has introduced a new high-performance reference design aimed at transforming how engineers approach 3-phase BLDC (brushless DC) motor control. The evaluation board integrates gallium nitride (GaN) FET technology into a compact, efficient platform optimized for 48 V motor systems, making it ideal for robotics, drones, e-bikes, and industrial automation.

At the heart of the EPC9196 is a set of six EPC23102 integrated GaN half-bridge FETs. These devices combine ultra-low RDS(on), fast switching, and high-frequency performance in a thermally efficient, low-inductance package. The result: reduced losses, minimal dead time, and near-silent motor operation—even at high speeds.

The key features are:

  • Supports phase currents up to 50 A (20 ARMS continuous)
  • Handles bus voltages from 20 V to 80 V
  • Suitable for a wide range of motor applications
  • Built-in protections:Under-voltage lockout, Over-temperature shutdown, Fault reporting for safe operation
  • Designed for robust, reliable performance in demanding conditions

Designed with system integration in mind, it includes the Microchip dsPIC33CK-based controller on the companion EPC9147 controller board, enabling sensorless FOC (field-oriented control) of BLDC motors with real-time speed and torque feedback. This helps developers quickly implement advanced control algorithms and get their applications running faster.

It has combination of high power density and ease of use. Despite its compact footprint (130 mm x 100 mm), it features optimized layout and thermal management, minimizing parasitic effects and maximizing efficiency. Whether you’re prototyping next-gen motor drives or benchmarking GaN against silicon MOSFETs, the board offers a fast path to high-performance design.

It’s a complete development platform for engineers ready to explore the advantages of GaN in real-world motor control systems. With growing demand for high-efficiency, lightweight, and compact power solutions, EPC’s GaN-based motor drive platform offers a glimpse into the future of motion control design.
