High-Power Thick Film Resistor For EV

A compact 50 W thick film resistor, rated for 50 °C case temperature, offers wide resistance options and direct heatsink mounting for reliable operation in high-stress automotive and industrial environments.

High-Power Thick Film Resistor For EV

Meeting the rising need for compact, high-performance passive components in next-generation vehicles, Vishay Intertechnology has introduced a 50 W thick film power resistor designed for direct heatsink mounting and extreme environmental endurance. The device, qualified to the AEC-Q200 automotive standard, is built for high-reliability applications in electric and hybrid powertrains where stable operation under stress is crucial.

The key features are:

  • 50 W rated at 50 °C case temperature (heatsink mounted)
  • Ceramic element designed for direct heatsink mounting
  • Wide resistance range from 0.010 Ω to 450 kΩ

Housed in a TO-220 package, the Sfernice LTA 50 withstands temperatures up to +175 °C while maintaining performance under high humidity, vibration, and electrical transients. This rugged design makes it well-suited for safety-critical automotive systems, including battery management, motor control, and onboard charging circuits.

The resistor covers a wide resistance range from 0.010 Ω to 450 kΩ, with tight tolerance options down to ± 1 %. Its non-inductive construction minimizes parasitic effects in fast-switching circuits, while its high dielectric strength of 1500 Vrms and limiting element voltage of 500 V ensure electrical robustness in high-energy environments.

In practical use, the LTA 50 can serve as a pre-charge or discharge resistor in battery management systems (BMS) or inverter modules, helping manage inrush currents and protect high-voltage components in EVs, HEVs, and PHEVs. The device’s compact footprint and direct-mount capability simplify thermal management, allowing designers to achieve higher power density without compromising reliability.RoHS compliance and an environmentally durable build further enhance the part’s suitability for long-life applications in harsh conditions, from under-the-hood electronics to industrial drives and power supplies.

With production now underway and lead times of about 10 weeks, the LTA 50 adds to the company’s growing lineup of automotive-qualified passive components engineered for high-efficiency, high-temperature performance in the evolving landscape of electrified mobility.
