A wireless test has demonstrated data transmission using terahertz frequencies, supporting the development of technologies for future communication networks.

Researchers at IIT Madras have demonstrated wireless data transmission at 6.39 Gbps using the Bharat 6G THz Testbed, marking a step towards developing technologies for future 6G networks in India.
The demonstration uses terahertz (THz) frequencies, which are being studied for their potential to support the high data rates expected from 6G. THz communication operates at frequencies between millimetre waves and infrared, offering access to large amounts of spectrum.
Higher frequencies can provide wider channels for carrying data. This could help future networks handle applications that need high data rates and low communication delays, including extended reality, robotics, autonomous systems, and connected infrastructure.
The work was carried out by IIT Madras in collaboration with the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), with support from the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF).
The Bharat 6G THz Testbed provides researchers with a platform to develop and test wireless technologies that could be used in future communication systems. Such testing can help evaluate technologies before they are considered for larger networks and standards.
The demonstration is part of India’s wider Bharat 6G programme, which aims to develop technologies for next-generation communication networks and contribute to global 6G standards.
6G is expected to go beyond simply providing faster mobile internet. Future networks will need to connect more devices, move larger amounts of data and support applications that require very low communication delays.
THz communication is one of the technologies being explored to meet these requirements. While commercial 6G networks are still under development, the latest demonstration shows that Indian researchers are working on wireless technologies that could form part of future 6G systems.
