How can urban security scanners reduce costs without compromising image quality? A compact X-ray detector combines two energy channels on one circuit board.

Detection Technology has introduced a dual-energy X-ray line detector designed to reduce costs for security scanners used in metro stations, railway stations and critical infrastructure. The AVA Zero detector combines low- and high-energy detection on a single printed circuit board (PCB), targeting high-volume urban security applications.
Dual-energy imaging helps security systems distinguish materials by comparing how they absorb X-rays at different energy levels. This information can support the identification of potentially hazardous objects in scanned baggage and other items. Accurate alignment between the two energy channels is important for producing reliable images.
The AVA Zero uses a compact sandwich architecture that integrates both energy channels on one PCB. This design improves registration accuracy between low- and high-energy signals, reduces installation space and cuts material use by 20%. The simplified construction is intended to lower detector costs while maintaining image quality.
The detector also follows the company’s modular platform approach, using the same readout and a single Detection Technology software development kit (DT SDK). This allows scanner manufacturers to integrate the detector into different system configurations without adopting separate readout and software arrangements for each configuration.
The product is part of the AVA (Advanced, Versatile and Affordable) family of modular line-scan detectors for security and industrial X-ray imaging. The wider range addresses applications spanning urban security, aviation screening, mining and sorting.
Tomi Fält, Director of Product Management at Detection Technology, says, “AVA Zero’s concise design enables more accurate low- and high-energy registration, better cost efficiency and a reduced material footprint.”
The detector is available in volume quantities. It is intended for manufacturers developing cost-efficient X-ray screening systems for public transport facilities and other urban security environments.
