Two new level-shifter boards support voltage translation from 1.65V to 5.5V, with options for breadboard prototyping and multi-interface UEXT connections.

Olimex has introduced two level-shifter boards, BB-LVL-SHIFT and UEXT-LVL-SHIFT, to connect embedded devices operating at different logic voltages. The boards support bidirectional signal translation, helping developers interface microcontrollers, sensors, displays and other peripherals without directly connecting incompatible logic levels. While BB-LVL-SHIFT targets breadboard-based projects using I2C and UART, UEXT-LVL-SHIFT supports UART, SPI and I2C through a pair of UEXT connectors. Both boards have published hardware design files for developers to inspect and modify.
The BB-LVL-SHIFT is a compact module measuring 15 × 13mm, with two bidirectional level-shifting lines. It supports operating voltages from 1.8V to 5.5V and signal speeds of up to 1Mbps. The two lines suit I2C signals, SDA and SCL, or UART signals, TX and RX. Its header pins come pre-soldered, allowing it to be plugged into a breadboard or connected using jumper wires without additional soldering. It can be used to connect 5V sensors to 3.3V development boards or interface 1.8V peripherals with higher-voltage microcontrollers.
The UEXT-LVL-SHIFT is designed for projects using Olimex’s 10-pin UEXT connector, which carries UART, SPI, I2C and power. Measuring 40 × 22mm, it provides level shifting across all three interfaces and supports target voltages from 1.65V to 5.5V. I2C operates at up to 1Mbps, while the stated maximum SPI and UART rates vary with voltage: 75Mbps at 1.8V, 180Mbps at 2.5V and 420Mbps at 5V. Two UEXT connectors allow compatible boards and modules to be linked without individually wiring the signal lines.
The main difference is interface coverage and connection method. BB-LVL-SHIFT is suited to simple, low-speed I2C or UART prototyping, whereas UEXT-LVL-SHIFT supports all three interfaces, including higher-speed SPI, through the UEXT connection. Both require the appropriate power and ground connections; the UEXT target connector must also supply its target voltage on the power pin.
Olimex has published the schematics and KiCad source files for both boards, enabling developers to study, reuse and modify the hardware designs. BB-LVL-SHIFT is priced at €3.95, while UEXT-LVL-SHIFT costs €4.95 for single-unit purchases. Both are listed as in stock.
