Top Tech companies like HCL Technologies has recruited nearly 700 12th passouts over the past two years in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for entry-level IT jobs. The selection process is based on a written test and after which the candidates will undergo a one-year skilling program.
“They will be able to take jobs in areas like mechanical, coding and development, engineering and R&D and will draw salaries of around Rs 2 to 2.2 lakh in the first year,” Srimathi Shivashankar, executive vice-president at HCL Tech, said at the rollout of its program in Telangana.
This hiring is for various roles like app development, support, and many other entry-level jobs. The selection and the job roles depending on how each candidate performs during the training. If a candidate gets placed in infrastructure, the candidate performs support and infrastructure related role and will get additional training on it. If in app development, the candidate will do coding and support jobs.
In addition to the one-year training, HCL technologies also offer candidates higher education programs offered by BITS Pilani and Shastra University. Interested candidates can enroll and study while working.
This trend is not just limited to HCL Technologies or just India, it is growing globally too. “There are intense 3-6 months’ bootcamps in the US where they are taught a specific coding or tech skill and are hired,” said Amit Aggarwal, CEO of the IT-ITES Sector Skill Council at Nasscom. He also added with many tech players witnessing a massive demand for skillets in data and cloud spaces, for many global IT companies, a degree is no longer a prerequisite.
IBM has also kick-started a career initiative, where most of the positions do not need an engineering degree. This two-year Advanced Technical Diploma Program, co-created and designed by IBM along with Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE)would be available at two Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Hyderabad and Bangalore and one women’s only ITI in Noida. The program will include industry relevant courses on hardware maintenance, web development, cloud-based development and deployment, analytics and soft skills training and students can seek admission post 12th grade. Post the successful completion of the course, students will be offered a five-month paid internship at IBM.
Approved by NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training) as a Level 6 NSQF program, this course will deeply focus on creating a workforce which meets the industry’s evolving skill needs. The modules will include a holistic approach such as partnering with the industry, adopting new learning technologies and delivering experience-based, applied to learn.
With a focus on elevating India’s workforce, these courses and opportunities would help to equip students with job-ready skills and training.
