New automotive-grade ambient light sensors deliver human-eye-matched spectral response, eliminate infrared interference, and provide reliable light measurement for advanced display and lighting systems.

Vishay Intertechnology has expanded its automotive optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of the VEMD4210FX02 and VEMD5525FX02 ambient light sensors. The new Automotive Grade PIN photodiode devices are designed to provide highly accurate visible-light measurements while eliminating the infrared (IR) sensitivity bump commonly found in conventional sensors, thereby improving optical accuracy in automotive and industrial applications.
Qualified to the AEC-Q102 automotive reliability standard, both sensors feature spectral sensitivity closely aligned with the human eye response and a peak sensitivity wavelength of 530 nm. By removing unwanted IR influence from the measurement curve, the devices enable more precise ambient light detection in environments where lighting conditions can vary significantly.
The sensors target automotive applications such as automatic brightness control for center information displays (CID), head-up displays (HUD), and rain-light-tunnel (RLT) systems. They can also be used for backlight dimming and light-level monitoring in industrial equipment, where accurate visible-light measurement is critical for user comfort and system performance.
The key features are:
- No infrared sensitivity bump for pure visible-light measurement
- Peak spectral sensitivity matched to human eye response at 530 nm
- Wettable flank package design for automated optical inspection
- Operating temperature range from -40°C to +110°C
- AEC-Q102 qualified for automotive-grade reliability and durability
Another key advantage is their improved spectral angular performance. The sensors maintain measurement accuracy across a wide range of incident light angles, enabling stable operation regardless of the direction of incoming light. This helps ensure consistent brightness control and reliable ambient-light monitoring in real-world operating conditions.
For compact designs, the VEMD4210FX02 is housed in an 0805 package measuring 2.0 mm × 1.25 mm × 0.7 mm and offers a typical reverse light current of 0.014 µA with spectral sensitivity spanning 470 nm to 610 nm. The VEMD5525FX02, designed for applications requiring higher sensitivity and improved low-light performance, features a larger 7.5 mm² radiant sensitive area and a typical reverse light current of 0.11 µA in a top-view QFN package.
Both devices incorporate wettable flanks to support optical solder-joint inspection and are specified for operation from -40°C to +110°C. The sensors are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, support Pb-free reflow soldering, and carry an MSL 4 rating with a floor life of 72 hours, making them suitable for demanding automotive and industrial environments.
