How can industrial networks carry more data without abandoning CAN? A higher-bandwidth interface extends the protocol for increasingly connected machines.

Texas Instruments has introduced the TCAN6062, a CAN XL transceiver designed to increase data capacity and communication speed in industrial networks. The device supports data rates of up to 20 Mbps and payloads of up to 2,048 bytes per frame, targeting applications including humanoid robots, industrial robots, and human-machine interfaces.
The transceiver addresses growing data requirements in industrial systems, where motion control, sensor feedback, diagnostics, and other functions increasingly need to share a network. CAN XL provides a path to higher bandwidth while retaining compatibility with established CAN-based communication architectures.
The TCAN6062 supports CAN XL alongside CAN FD and CAN signal improvement capability (SIC) operations. This backward compatibility can allow engineers to migrate existing systems towards CAN XL incrementally rather than replacing an entire network architecture.
The device also supports mixed-network architectures by enabling Ethernet communication through Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) tunnelling. This allows diagnostics, sensor information, control traffic, and over-the-air updates to be carried through a common network infrastructure.
For complex networks with many connected nodes, the transceiver’s SIC capability can reduce signal ringing by up to 80%, according to the company. It also supports a wide input/output voltage range and protection of up to ±58V, providing additional flexibility for industrial designs.
