Industrial PoE Simplifies Edge Connectivity

A new industrial Power over Ethernet solution delivers up to 90W over a single cable, enabling reliable deployment of connected industrial devices without upgrading existing network infrastructure.

Industrial PoE Simplifies Edge Connectivity

Microchip Technology has expanded its industrial networking portfolio with the PD-9601GCI industrial Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspan. This single-port IEEE 802.3bt-compliant solution delivers up to 90W of power alongside Gigabit Ethernet data over a single cable. Designed for industrial automation, smart factories, transportation systems and outdoor installations, the device enables PoE deployment without replacing or upgrading existing Ethernet switches, simplifying the expansion of Industrial IoT infrastructure.

The PD-9601GCI injects power into Ethernet links downstream of a standard network switch, allowing compatible powered devices to receive both power and data through one cable. This approach reduces wiring complexity, eliminates the need for separate electrical outlets near connected equipment, and lowers installation costs, particularly in retrofit industrial environments where existing networks lack native PoE support.

The key features are:

  • IEEE 802.3bt compliant Type 4 PoE injector
  • IP30-rated sealed metal enclosure for harsh environments
  • Dual 20–60V DC redundant power inputs
  • Industrial surge protection for improved reliability
  • DIN rail, wall, or panel mounting flexibility

Engineered for demanding operating conditions, the industrial midspan features a sealed IP30-rated metal enclosure designed to withstand vibration and harsh factory environments. It supports an extended operating temperature range of −40°C to 75°C, making it suitable for manufacturing plants, warehouses, transportation infrastructure and outdoor industrial installations where commercial networking equipment may not operate reliably.

To improve system resilience, the device supports dual 20–60V DC power inputs, enabling redundant power configurations for applications requiring high availability. Integrated industrial-grade surge protection helps safeguard connected equipment against voltage transients commonly encountered in electrically noisy environments.

The PD-9601GCI supports 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet communication while delivering high-power PoE compliant with the IEEE 802.3bt standard. It also offers multiple installation options, including DIN rail, wall and panel mounting, allowing integration into industrial control cabinets and automation systems. Compatibility testing with industrial automation devices further helps manufacturers streamline deployment and reduce integration challenges.

Typical applications include IP surveillance cameras, industrial wireless access points, machine vision systems, IoT gateways, edge computing devices, access control systems, sensors and other networked equipment requiring high-power PoE. By combining power delivery and data connectivity into a single Ethernet cable, the Microchip PD-9601GCI provides equipment manufacturers and system integrators with a plug-and-play solution for faster and more scalable Industrial IoT deployments.
