A framework organises battery research data into a common format, supporting data sharing, analysis, experiment design, and AI research.

A research team at the University of Maryland and the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute has published a study introducing a standardised battery database and data reporting framework for research-level solid-state batteries. Covering battery materials, components, fabrication, device testing, and performance, the framework is designed to address critical gaps in battery reporting while supporting improved analysis, visualisation, experiment design, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven research.
The study presents an ontology-informed database containing 245 solid-state battery records, 167 structured variables, and more than 40,000 data points. The framework captures the materials, components, fabrication methods, and testing conditions required to fully describe battery devices. It also supports FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data practices, enabling advanced analytics, data visualisation, experiment design, and AI applications.
According to the researchers, the study provides three major advantages to the battery research community. It integrates the complete set of information needed to describe a solid-state battery device, examines reporting practices across the scientific literature and assesses the presence and significance of information that is not reported, and establishes a structured approach to battery data reporting through clearly defined variables and standardised terminology.
The researchers said the work addresses a long-standing challenge in battery science. Thousands of peer-reviewed papers on battery devices are published every year, but the data are often reported in different formats and with varying levels of detail and accessibility. The resulting patchwork of information makes it difficult for scientists, engineers, industry partners, and policymakers to fully leverage published research and identify opportunities for innovation.
