A Fusion Of Technology And Fashion

Footwear that translates musical beats into stunning LED light shows, creating a dynamic, rhythmic visual experience.

Lightening Shoes

Infineon Technologies AG, a semiconductor producer for power systems and IoT, collaborates with Adidas AG to introduce the Lighting Shoe. The Adidas NMD S1 shoe detects environmental music and rhythms, producing varied and customizable lighting displays. Audio signals are transformed into vibrant LED illuminations on the footwear through microphones and microcontrollers.

Showcasing the potential of semiconductor technology in fashion, the Infineon Lighting Shoe prototype emphasizes the power of integration. With the precision of XENSIV Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) microphones, the shoe captures even the faintest audio signals. Its in-built PSoC microcontroller then processes this auditory data. The shoe benefits from the EZ-PD Barrel Connector Replacement (BCR) technology, which enables USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charging and is enhanced by efficient OptiMOS power MOSFETs. All this technology is fitted within the Adidas original NMD S1 design, ensuring both style and comfort remain uncompromised.

This collaboration between Infineon and Adidas is a testament to the fusion of tech and fashion. “Contextual Awareness through Intuitive Sensing makes it easier to use IoT gadgets – when the devices can hear, see or feel through technology. The Infineon Lighting Shoe is a unique example showing how technology and digitalization can be brought closer to people. We are proud to have worked with Adidas to implement this innovation collaboration,” said Adam White, Division President of Power & Sensor Systems at Infineon.

“Innovation and performance are core drivers at Adidas. When we create innovations, they must be mind-blowing, go beyond the normal, surprise and above all: be fun. With the Lighting Shoe prototype, we have succeeded in this in our collaboration with Infineon. We show that technology and style complement each other to create a digital product,” said Burkhard Dümler, Director of Innovation at Adidas.
