Compact AiM Radar Modules Offer 3D Human Sensing

The modules deliver multi-channel measurement and angular resolution for 3D sensing of human motion, posture, and falls, targeting industrial requirements.

Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) introduces Antenna-in-Module (AiM) millimeter wave radar modules, the AK5816AIM and AK5818AIM. The AK5816AIM targets consumer and industrial applications, while the AK5818AIM is designed to meet automotive requirements.

Each combines a millimetre-wave radar chip with an integrated antenna array in a compact 23 mm × 23 mm package. The design enables three-dimensional sensing, with applications including human presence detection, movement tracking, posture analysis, and fall detection.

Because the modules use radar instead of cameras, they are suited to environments where privacy is a concern. Typical uses include health and safety monitoring in homes or care facilities, as well as occupancy detection for energy management systems such as heating, ventilation, and lighting control.

AKM supplies two evaluation kits to support testing and development, AIMEZ V and LUMI.

The AIMEZ V kit provides connectivity through USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth Low Energy, and is intended for proof-of-concept and early testing.The LUMI kit includes system-on-chip, making it suitable for algorithm development and handling large datasets, including machine-learning tasks. 

Both kits include a baseline software environment and can be extended with proprietary algorithms. They allow developers to assess the radar’s performance and plan integration into end products without building custom test hardware.
