High-Performance MRAM-Powered Edge MCUs

A new generation of high-performance microcontrollers combines a 1GHz dual-core architecture, integrated MRAM, and advanced graphics capabilities to power intelligent edge devices, industrial automation, and AI-driven HMI applications—all while delivering faster performance, lower power, and enhanced reliability.

Renesas Electronics has expanded its high-performance RA8 Series with the introduction of the RA8M2 and RA8D2 microcontrollers, built around a 1GHz Arm Cortex-M85 core and an optional 250MHz Cortex-M33 core. Designed for compute-intensive edge applications, the devices deliver up to 7300 Coremarks and integrate MRAM for faster writes, higher endurance, and better energy efficiency than traditional flash memory.

While one model targets general-purpose applications, the other is optimized for advanced graphics and human–machine interface (HMI) designs. A standout feature is the embedded MRAM, which eliminates erase cycles and allows byte-level data access—ideal for real-time control and frequent data logging. System-in-package variants with 4MB or 8MB of external flash further extend performance for demanding workloads.

The key features are:

  • Fabricated on a 22nm ultra-low-leakage process for higher efficiency
  • Delivers faster data handling and improved processing throughput
  • Supports enhanced ML acceleration with Arm Helium technology
  • Features dual Gigabit Ethernet with TSN for reliable industrial networking

The lineup also brings rich multimedia capabilities, including a high-resolution graphics LCD controller (up to 1280×800) supporting both parallel RGB and MIPI DSI interfaces, a 2D drawing engine for offloaded rendering, and camera inputs via 16-bit CEU and MIPI CSI-2 interfaces for AI-based vision applications.

Comprehensive software support through the Flexible Software Package (FSP) enables faster prototyping with FreeRTOS, Azure RTOS, or Zephyr, while allowing seamless integration of legacy code and reference designs. Developers can also leverage over 400 “Winning Combinations” — pre-tested hardware–software architectures for applications like smart glasses, power systems, and robotics. By combining raw performance, advanced security, and MRAM-based efficiency, these new microcontrollers set a new benchmark for next-generation industrial, IoT, and AI-driven embedded systems.
