Renesas Electronics Corporation, a supplier of semiconductor solutions, has introduced the RZ/T2H, its highest-performing microprocessor (MPU) for industrial equipment. With application processing and real-time capabilities, the MPU provides high-speed, precise control for industrial robot motors, supporting up to nine axes. It also supports network communications on a single chip, including Industrial Ethernet. The MPU is designed for industrial controller applications such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motion controllers, distributed control systems (DCSs), and computerized numerical controls (CNCs).

As industries adopt automation to address labour shortages and improve efficiency, industrial robots and controller equipment use has increased. The MPU provides the functionality and performance needed for these applications in one device. Traditionally, such systems used multiple MPUs or a combination of MPUs and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for control. By integrating these capabilities onto one chip, the RZ/T2H reduces component count and eliminates the need for FPGA programming, saving time and costs.

It features two Cortex-R52 CPUs with a maximum frequency of 1 GHz, each with 576 KB of tightly coupled memory (TCM) for real-time processing. This enables tasks like Linux applications, robot trajectory generation, and PLC sequence processing to run on a single chip while handling real-time operations such as motor control and Industrial Ethernet protocol processing.

The MPU supports the control of up to nine servo motor axes for industrial robots. It includes components for motor control, such as 3-phase PWM timers, delta-sigma interfaces for current measurement, and encoder interfaces. Motor control peripherals are connected through the Low Latency Peripheral Port (LLPP) bus of the Cortex-R52 CPU core, ensuring quick access.
