High-voltage DC systems are tricky and take up space. Now, a capacitor can reduce parts, save board space, and make designs last longer.

Designers working with high-voltage DC systems face several problems. Handling bus voltages up to 1100 V usually requires connecting three 400–450 V capacitors in series with voltage-balancing resistors across each. This increases design complexity, consumes PCB space, raises cost, and creates more points where a failure could occur.
Vishay’s updated 193 PUR-SI series of snap-in aluminum electrolytic capacitors addresses these issues by offering higher voltage ratings of 550 V and 600 V, allowing the same voltage range to be achieved with fewer components and without balancing resistors. The extra voltage margin also extends capacitor life and boosts overall system reliability.
These capacitors are built for demanding high-power converters, capable of handling ripple currents up to 3.27 A, which is about 30% higher than standard capacitors in similar case sizes. With a rated life of 5000 hours at +105 °C, they can support more than 25 years of operation at typical ambient temperatures up to +60 °C. The series covers capacitance values from 47 µF to 820 µF in 25 compact case sizes from 22 × 25 mm to 35 × 60 mm and can be mounted securely using optional 3-pin keyed snap-in terminals.
As polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte, the 193 PUR-SI devices are ideal for smoothing, buffering, and DC-link filtering in switch-mode power supplies, chargers, and UPS systems. They are also well suited for battery management and motor control in electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as industrial motor drives, air conditioners, solar inverters, medical equipment, and welding systems. By reducing part count, saving PCB space, and improving reliability, these capacitors make high-voltage, high-current designs simpler, more efficient, and longer-lasting.
