onsemi Debuts Advanced Depth Sensor for Industrial Applications

Onsemi has launched the Hyperlux ID family, the industry’s first real-time indirect time-of-flight (iToF) sensor capable of high-precision, long-distance measurements and 3D imaging of fast-moving objects. Using a proprietary global shutter pixel architecture and on-board storage, it captures entire scenes while processing depth in real-time. This innovation extends depth sensing up to 30 meters—four times farther than standard iToF sensors—within a compact design.

The sensor delivers both monochrome images and depth data simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate sensors and simplifying system design. It enables accurate depth sensing in dynamic environments, even for fast-moving objects.

As automation and robotics expand in industrial applications, precise and efficient depth sensing is crucial for productivity and safety. Traditional iToF sensors struggle with limited range, harsh lighting, and depth calculation for moving objects.

With high-resolution imaging and precise motion tracking, the Hyperlux ID family reduces errors, downtime, and operational costs in manufacturing. It also enhances facial recognition, gesture detection, and 3D video conferencing in commercial applications.

The Hyperlux ID sensor family combines global shutter architecture with iToF technology for fast and precise depth sensing. It measures depth by detecting the phase shift of reflected light from one or multiple Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs).

Its proprietary pixel architecture captures and stores four different light phases in a single exposure, providing an instant full-scene view and improving depth accuracy. The global shutter ensures all pixels align with the VCSEL, reducing interference from ambient infrared light. On-board depth processing enables real-time results without requiring expensive external memory or a high-performance processor.

“Hyperlux ID not only offers higher resolution and better ambient light suppression than any other iToF sensor available in the market but also impressed us with its integrated processing which calculates depth, confidence and intensity maps at high speeds. This makes it particularly suitable for capturing moving objects,” said Alexander Lewinsky, Managing Director, IDS Imaging Development Systems. “We were able to very quickly develop and expand our range of 3D cameras with a cost-efficient time-of-flight camera for indoor and outdoor applications for large-volume projects thanks to the close cooperation with Onsemi.”
