  • Allows automated driving in conjunction with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and perception sensors
  • Includes extensive failsafe functions for self-diagnostics

Murata has developed a new Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) with six degrees of freedom (6 DoF) inertial sensor, the SCHA600 that provides high performance for safety-critical automotive applications. The sensor enables new Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) functionality and automated driving through data fusion with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and various sensors such as camera, radar and lidar. The product delivers the best performance available for automotive applications regarding bias stability and noise.

This new sensor is a single package 6DoF component integrated with GNSS and perception sensors for L2+ and higher levels of autonomy. It enables centimetre-level accuracy with respect to vehicle dynamics and position, thus enabling safe and robust autonomous driving. The device guarantees better operation during high mechanical shock and vibration.

Extensive features for overcoming autonomous driving challenges

The SCHA600 features extensive failsafe functions and error bits for self-diagnostics. These include internal reference signal monitoring, checksum techniques for verifying communication signal saturation/over-range detection. Its self-test function verifies the proper operation of the entire signal chain from the MEMS sensor movement to signal conditioning circuitry for every measurement cycle.

Other product features:

  • Component-level dynamic cross-axis calibration enables better than 0.3° cross-axis error over temperature
  • Allan variance down to 0.9 °/h at room temperature
  • Gyro RMS noise level below 0.007°/s
  • Excellent vibration robustness
  • Extensive self-diagnostics features
  • ±125°/s or ±300°/s angular rate measurement range to cover various application needs
  • ±6 g acceleration measurement range
  • −40°C~+110°C operating temperature range
  • 3.0V~3.6V supply voltage

Robust and accurate applications

The factory dynamic calibration of the SCHA600 removes the need for cost-intensive calibration at the ECU level in applications requiring accurate inertial data. The performance has been optimized for usage as primary Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for automated driving, while ESC unit provides robust redundancy. Integration to GNSS gives robust and accurate positioning, therefore improving the autonomous driving vehicle motion calculation with reliable, frequently updated inertial data. The device can also be used for Platform Stabilization and as a Lane Keeping Assistant (LKA)

The SCHA600 comes in a SOIC housing (32 pins) with dimensions of 18.7 mm x 8.5 mm x 4.5 mm. The product is qualified according to the AEC-Q100 standard and is ISO26262 ASIL-D (Automotive Safety Integrity Level) compliant.
