As industries demand instant intelligence, relying solely on cloud-based AI is no longer sufficient for time-critical applications. Industrial, automotive, IoT, and data center networks require AI inference at the edge, close to sensors and actuators, to enable real-time decisions, reduce latency, and improve data privacy.

Microchip Technology is addressing this shift with its microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs) transformed into full-stack edge AI platforms. These combine silicon, software, development tools, and production-ready applications to simplify deployment of AI models directly at the edge, accelerating intelligent, secure, and energy-efficient systems in industrial automation, smart IoT devices, and automotive environments.

The platforms come with pre-trained AI models and sample application code that can be customized for different needs. They can detect electrical arc faults, monitor equipment health for predictive maintenance, recognize faces with liveness verification, and even respond to voice commands. Engineers can use Microchip’s MPLAB® X IDE with the Harmony framework and ML Development Suite to deploy AI on 8-, 16-, and 32-bit MCUs. For more demanding tasks, FPGAs with the VectorBlox Accelerator SDK 2.0 accelerate vision processing, sensor analytics, and other compute-heavy operations.

Key features of the launch include:

  • MCUs and MPUs turned into production-ready AI platforms
  • Pre-trained models for industrial, consumer, and automotive applications
  • Unified software framework for rapid prototyping and deployment
  • FPGA acceleration for computationally intensive edge tasks
  • Support for predictive maintenance, object detection, motion surveillance, and more

Mark Reiten, Corporate Vice President of Microchip’s Edge AI business unit, says, “AI at the edge is no longer experimental—it’s expected,”Our full-stack solutions combine MCUs, MPUs, and FPGAs with optimized ML models and development tools, enabling customers to deploy secure, intelligent systems quickly in demanding markets.”
