CCD linear image sensor delivers 40% lower random noise and achieves data rates up to 100 MHz—enabling faster, higher-quality image capture for demanding applications.

Toshiba has introduced a new high-resolution CCD linear image sensor, the TCD2728DG, aimed at enhancing performance in A3 multifunction printers and line scan cameras. The sensor begins shipping today and is designed to meet growing market demands for high-speed, high-quality image processing in document handling and industrial inspection systems.
Engineered as a lens-reduction type CCD sensor, it features 7,500 pixels—enough to capture A3-sized documents at 600 dpi resolution with margin. A key upgrade over its predecessor (TCD2726DG), the new model delivers approximately 40% less random noise (NDσ) thanks to a reduced output amplifier gain. This directly translates into significantly sharper and cleaner scanned images.
The sensor supports a 100 MHz maximum data rate (via dual 50 MHz channels), allowing for fast scanning and image processing, crucial in office environments where multifunction printers must handle large volumes efficiently. Its application extends beyond printers, proving equally beneficial in line scan cameras used for real-time inspection systems—including semiconductor inspection and automated food sorting equipment.
Toshiba has also integrated a built-in timing generator circuit and CCD driver into the TCD2728DG, simplifying system development for OEMs and reducing the need for additional external components.
Key Specifications:
- Pixel Count: 7,500 × 3 lines
- Pixel Size: 4.7 µm × 4.7 µm
- Random Noise (NDσ): 1.9 mV
- Data Rate: Max 100 MHz (50 MHz × 2 channels)
- Package: WDIP32
- Operating Voltage: VAVDD, VDVDD, VCKDVDD: 3.1–3.5V; VVDD10: 9.5–10.5V
- Additional Features: Timing generator, CCD driver
With this launch, the company reaffirms its commitment to delivering advanced sensing technologies tailored to the evolving needs of document imaging and industrial automation. The TCD2728DG not only boosts image fidelity but also supports next-generation scanning and inspection demands with efficiency and precision.
